The Fall Yard Cleanup Checklist for Monterey County Properties

Green Angels5 min read

Our rain arrives late and hard. A focused fall cleanup protects drainage, prevents winter plant loss, and makes spring far less work.

Monterey County does not get a gradual autumn. Dry months stretch on, then the first real storm arrives and finds every clogged drain and unprotected bed on the property. A focused cleanup before that first storm prevents most of the damage we get called out to repair in January.

Clear the water's path first

Drainage is the highest-value item on the list and the one most often skipped. Leaves and accumulated debris block area drains, downspout outlets, and swales, and water that cannot leave the property will find somewhere to sit — usually against a foundation, a fence line, or the low corner of a lawn.

Walk the property and trace where water will go during a heavy rain. Clear every inlet, check that downspouts discharge away from structures, and make sure swales are not blocked by mulch or debris.

  • Clear area drains, grates, and downspout outlets
  • Confirm swales and drainage channels are unobstructed
  • Note any low spots that pooled last winter and need regrading

Cut back, but do not over-prune

Fall is the right time to remove dead material, clear crossing branches, and reduce anything overhanging a roof or walkway. It is the wrong time for hard structural pruning on most ornamentals, which pushes tender new growth at exactly the wrong moment.

Deadwood removal and clearance pruning improve both safety and appearance without stressing the plant. Save major shaping for the appropriate window in the plant's cycle.

Refresh beds before the rain, not after

Weeding and re-edging beds before the rainy season pays off twice. Weeds pulled now do not seed through winter, and mulch applied before the rain arrives protects the soil surface from compaction and erosion during heavy downpours.

Top up mulch to a consistent depth across beds, keeping it pulled back slightly from trunks and stems so moisture does not sit against bark all winter.

Dial back the irrigation controller

The most avoidable water waste of the year happens in the weeks after the first rains, when systems keep running a summer schedule. Reduce run times, or shut the system down entirely once rain is established, and make a note to review it again in spring.

It is also a good moment to check for leaks. A system that has been running hard all summer often has a cracked head or weeping valve that is easy to spot before it is buried under wet growth.

A thorough fall cleanup is not glamorous work, but it is the item on the yearly calendar that most reliably prevents winter damage. If your property has not had one in a while, it is the best possible first project with a new crew.
